Our History

Club Toowoomba has a proud bowls history dating back to 1947, when the South Toowoomba Bowls Club was established.

The plaque at the entrance to the northern green — the Curly Anderson Memorial Green — commemorates Thomas Sheldon, the first Foundation Member, on 2 September 1947. South Toowoomba became affiliated with the Darling Downs District Bowling Association (DDBA) in 1950.

The club’s first roll-up occurred while the original clubhouse was still under construction. In its early years, members played at their “Mother Club,” North Toowoomba, until their own green and clubhouse were ready. The first clubhouse, built from a donated Army hut and constructed by Alf Hodge (West Toowoomba Member), became the heart of the growing club. A bore and 30,000-gallon elevated tank were installed to maintain the green — a significant achievement at the time. The Ladies Club was also formed in 1950.

Originally owning all of Gold Park, the club later exchanged land with council, allowing for the development of a second green in 1957. Membership steadily grew, reaching approximately 150 members by the late 1940s and around 260 members by 1985, when major clubhouse extensions were completed. The Silver Jubilee was celebrated in 1972, marking 25 years of community sport and camaraderie.

This partnership marked a significant step forward for bowls in the region, culminating in the construction of the first undercover green in the Darling Downs District. The addition of the undercover green provided year-round playing opportunities and positioned Club Toowoomba strongly for future growth.

Today, Club Toowoomba stands as a modern community club built on decades of tradition — honouring its rich history while continuing to invest in facilities that support bowlers across the Darling Downs.
